As much as the BLM movement was for a great cause and had all the right intentions, there were some negative impacts that these protests had. One of them being crime.

As a result of the Black Lives Matter Protests, according to UK Crime Stats, crime has gone up. From March 2020 to October 2020 the total crimes soared, peaking in July, the peak of the Black Lives matter movement.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Waheed Saleem, said: “It’s worrying to see hate crime rising.

“Attacking someone physically, verbally or via social media because of their disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity is totally unacceptable and won’t be tolerated."

“Our fight against this nasty crime will go on as long as the crime is being committed.”

Councillor Doug Pollen says that he will not tolerate mistreatment from the people of Lichfield.

“There is no place in our society for racism and no one should face discrimination because of the colour of their skin. We fully support the right to peaceful protest and I was glad to see that right being exercised yesterday – particularly as social distancing was clearly observed throughout the demonstration that took place.”

According to the West Midlands Police, race hate crimes rose from 2019 to 2020. Particularly when the protests were going on in June and July, the crime rate went from 423 in June 2019 to 743 in 2020.

The Home Office statistics state that in the year ending 2020 there were 105,090 hate crimes recorded in England, an increase of 8% from the year before.

The Black Lives Matter protests, as much as they did a world of good, did have some negative side affects. Crime rates skyrocketed and lots of people lost everything, everyone has the right to voice their opinions, as long as we all do it in a safe way.
