Is the beauty community killing your self esteem? Here’s some tips straight from an industry insider

Self love and body positivity is a widely talked about subject online, especially amongst the beauty community.

Beauty blogger Charlotte Price chats about her journey of self love in the community.

Charlotte frequently aims her social media around body positivity, self love and uplifting women. She even created her own hashtag #bodyposipals that her and her fans use when sharing pictures of themselves that they particularly like and make them feel good in their skin.

She says that self love is ‘when you aren’t thinking about other people’s opinions and not letting what other people think of you affect the way you feel about yourself, is when you truly love yourself.’

She started this journey when she moved to university, she says the trick is to stay busy and focus on the things that you are achieving.

“I’m quite active and busy at uni so I never find the time to contemplate my self love. I think moving to university has helped me love myself more than anything as it has opened me up to so many opportunities and I have realised how proud I am of myself.”

Charlotte thinks that anyone struggling with their self love or confidence should ‘use social media in a positive way – remove any accounts that you find you’re comparing yourself to.’ Even just having time off the internet she says can help massively as she finds that it’s ‘usually the main cause.’

A lot of people think that the beauty community, especially social media, can be toxic for girls and women struggling with their body image. Charlotte says that its actually up to you as you can choose what you see on your feeds.

“I think there are definitely toxic elements, but I follow so many amazing women whom are empowering others to love their body and become confident in themselves, there are so many toxic expectations but if you are able to remove those with an unfollow then social media can be an amazing place to work on your confidence.”

She feels that the pressure put on people to look a certain way in the industry is improving, as Charlotte says that “there is pressure to be slim and have completely clear skin etc but I think brands are cracking on to improve diversity on their websites to contribute to the body positivity community.”

Throughout her journey of self love she explains that she reached the place that she is in through appreciation of all the things other people tend to take for granted. “I reached this happy place by appreciating all the amazing things my body allows me to do everyday like breathe, walk, etc rather than focusing on the outward physical appearance.”

Charlotte says that beauty bloggers having surgery isn’t hypocritical or damaging if done in the correct manner. ‘I think as long as they’re honest that’s fine and they are doing it for the right reasons. I believe women can do whatever they want with their body because its their choice. But if they hide the fact that they have had lip fillers for example and their audience think its real and start to compare themselves with unrealistic expectations, that’s where it gets really damaging and thoughtless.’

Struggling with self confidence is a daily thing for most people, you just have to take everything you see online with a pinch of salt. If you start to think that seeing a certain person’s photos everyday is getting you down about yourself, unfollow them, and take some time out of your day to recognise how amazing your body is, make a habit of it, and you’ll be feeling better in no time!
